The purpose of this piece of art is to show that depicting female genitalia is not the sole right of pornographers, erotic artists, and feminists, but I bet you could easily argue McCartney is a feminist. But what do you guys think? Is the art feminist, erotic, pornographic?
His work has definitely got me thinking about doing a similar piece of art for this project, maybe a dedication painting to Sheela-na-gig. I think it's wonderful that artists like McCartney are working to counter negative body image stereotypes, and hope to find more work like his. It was incredible to see so many women embracing and loving their bodies through artwork.
I'd like to take a minute to thank people who have been visiting the blog, in the gender class and friends on Facebook! I hope you guys are enjoying what I've been posting, and would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on how to make the blog better in the comments. The primary intent of this is to not only educate, but empower people and create a dialogue on how to make the world a better, more accepting place for women and girls. So please, don't forget to comment and leave your thoughts on everything!
I definitely think that this piece of art is empowering for women. I also agree with you on how it truly is wonderful to see artists working to counter the negative body image stereotypes in our society!
ReplyDeleteAs you mentioned in a post before this, many women feel insecure about their vaginas/labia due to comments made by their partners who have ultimately been influenced by the current display of women's genitalia in the porn industry, which led many to turn to labiaplasty. And I think that it's empowering that the variations of vaginas are being displayed in a positive way to many. I feel as if many aren't really exposed to the idea that there are many different variations of the vagina and because of this, one may feel like their vagina is "weird looking" since it doesn't look like what they have been shown.
I also think that the way they are displayed, in just a simple, almost innocent way, removes any "taboo" and sexual reaction one might conjure up when they view these vaginas and it leaves you with just this natural beauty of variation that bodies have.
I hope that makes sense. It's almost two in the morning so I might have a few grammatical errors in this!
Also, forgive me if I stated something that was stated in the youtube clip. Youtube hasn't been properly working for me today, so if I have said anything that has already been said in that, lol disregard me~
